At the Bonhams London Fine Jewellery sale on Saturday December 5th, a pair of Kashmir sapphire earrings took centre stage by setting a new auction world record.
The Kashmir sapphire earrings, 7.92ct & 7.96ct date back from the 19th century and were once owned by an unamed European princess. They sold for $2.3 million, smashing its estimate of $1.2 million.
Director of Jewellery for UK and Europe at Bonhams Jean Ghika says "These lots attracted interest from around the globe because of their exceptional quality and rarity. The prices achieved reflect the buoyancy of the market for coloured gemstones of the highest quality".
"Our last two sales in Hong Kong and London have demonstrated that the market is string for coloured gemstones".
