Morganite is perhaps the most admired gem from the multi-coloured Beryl-group. This semi precious gemstone is often being referred to as ‘pink emerald’, as both are rare and high in market value since the discovery.
Morganite hardly comes in intense colour; most stones are very pale coloured. There are morganites in various pink and peach hues, which makes them enormously appealing. Women the world over love the gemstone’s tones for its charm, esprit and tenderness. Some are decidedly pink, some tend more to lilac or violet, while others get a subtle hint of orange. Big sizes stones come in stronger colour than small sizes stones. However, the colour and the cut, not size, determine the quality. Only a high-quality cut will allow the subtle colour of the morganite to shine out!

The gemstone comes in faceted cutting most of the time; while rare pieces come in cabochon, exhibiting cat's eye effect. Ovals, pear and cushions are popular shapes for this stone.
First pink morganite was found in California, USA, in 1910. The following year, the gemstone was commercially discovered in Madagascar, and given its existing name after American banker and gemstones collector J.P. Morgan. Since then, Madagascar has remained the primary supplier of pink morganites; while peach gemstones generally come from Brazil.
Morganite comes with good transparency, hardness, durability and luster which makes it one of the most favourite stones of all jewellers. In fact, morganite is much clearer than other beryl stones, but absolutely eye clean stone is rarely found in the nature. Morganite always carries fine inclusions in its crystal system; a few stones might possess large flaws. Such stones are of poor quality and should be avoided.
The natural bright pink colour is valued the most. Therefore, morganites are often being heated, treated with oils or enhanced, to improve the colour of the stone. Note to remember: even though the results are pretty durable, such procedures reduce the monetary value of the stone. This is why when buying morganites one should be cautious and ask about the performed treatments with no hesitation. Also, imitations are often found in the market, as morganite is a rare gem. So, we highly recommend to take extra care when purchasing the gemstone.
This crystal in smaller sizes makes a wonderful stone to be used in creating fascinating jewellery items. Meanwhile, large morganites are used as ornamental stone for sculptures and carvings. People all over the world treasure animal figures and human faces carved on this stone, which make extraordinary decorative pieces.
