This rare blue diamond weighing 29.62 carats was Nicknamed the Blue Moon Diamond because of it's once in a blue moon size, colour, and clarity. The gem was graded Fancy Vivid Blue & Internally Flawless by GIA. Fancy Vivid Blue being the highest colour grade possible for a diamond.
It's journey began in 1905 when the world's largest rough diamond, the 3,106 carat Cullinan, was discovered in south africa's mine bearing the same name. The Cullinan mine is known as the main source of blue diamond.
Cora International, a New York jeweller first purchased the ocean-blue gemstone, taking six months to cut and polish the rough diamond. Finished at 12.03 carats, sotheby's will now offer the cushion-cut diamond on November 11 at its Magnificnet jewels and noble jewels sale at Geneva. Estimated to bring in between $35 million and $55 million, it is expected to smash the current world record for a blue diamond.
The record was set last year with the Zoe diamond, a 9.75 carat Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond selling for more than $32 million. The spectacular Blue Moon Diamond will be on show in London, Hong Kong, and New York.
